Bell Biv DeVoe - Do Me!
After all that political talk, I feel a change of subject is required.

I will admit that I do not like pretty much everything he stands for, more importantly, his suggestions on how to fix agreed upon problems. But with this subject, he really does view our entire educational system as indoctrination factories. What I posted does not change that. And this was an account given by a public affairs reporter for the Des Moines Register, not a biased piece on MoveOn.org or ThinkProgress. I tried to be pretty careful to not use biased sources or out-of-context quotes specifically for this reason. I let the actual comment speak for itself. There was no additional interpretation given here, as I did not add my commentary on the quote.
I do agree that he does want to change our educational system, and I do agree that he wants to do so for the benefit of our children. Hell, I believe that most candidates on either side, at the very base of their beliefs, want to do good things for our country.
But claiming that head start and higher education are “indoctrinating” our kids is where one steps over the line of logic and jumps into fear-mongering and propaganda. Specifically the use of the word “indoctrination” conveys negative connotations, which is why he’s using it, not just in this speech but in other situations as well. No one from anywhere across the political spectrum wants their kids indoctrinated, but everyone does want a better education for their kids. If he had only said “our education system is broken and I plan to fix it”, there would be no story here.
And even with all this, maybe you will still feel that I am painting the quote with a bias to make him sound like a crazy fool. I will still maintain that he does a good job doing that on his own, and we’ll have to agree to disagree.

Actually, the entire “speech” (comments made to about 20 people at the Perry (Iowa) Public Library) was really about making public education work for KIDS rather than continuing to make it work for the GOVERNMENT. I hate things out of context.
There is no out-of-context argument here. Yes, there was a speech, and plenty of content both before and after this comment. But the portion I posted and the portion that was reported is not out of context. It is his position. He wants to give more power to localities for their own education system to limit the federal and state governments’ power to “indoctrinate” our youth. He also claims that colleges and universities “indoctrinate” our kids. The portion of the speech I posted does not change the perspective nor position of his views.
Out-of-context is more akin to someone speaking in the third person, and then removing the portion that explains the point of view, thereby making it first person. Another example of out-of-context is what happened to Shirley Sherrod, who’s speech was excerpted by Andrew Brietbart in a way that made her seem racist, when in fact, the full speech proved to show her to be the complete opposite.
That is out of context. This is not.

It is a parent’s responsibility to educate their children. It is not the government’s job. We have sort of lost focus here a little bit. Of course, the government wants their hands on your children as fast as they can. That is why I opposed all these early starts and pre-early starts, and early-early starts. They want your children from the womb so they can indoctrinate your children as to what they want them to be. I am against that.

I understand why Barack Obama wants to send every kid to college, because of their indoctrination mills, absolutely … The indoctrination that is going on at the university level is a harm to our country.

That may make absolutely no sense to anyone but me.
